Giovanni Piedimonte

Giovanni Piedimonte, MD, is the Steven and Nancy Calabrese Endowed Chair for Excellence in Pediatric Care, Research, and Education and Professor & Chair of Pediatrics of the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He also serves as Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Institute, Physician-in-Chief of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, and President of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation in Cleveland, Ohio. Previously, he served for more than 6 years as the first Wyeth Research Scholar, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at West Virginia University School of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief of the WVU Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, WV. Education and Training: Dr. Piedimonte received his degree in Medicine from the University Of Rome School Of Medicine in Italy, completed his residency training in Pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco, and received fellowship training at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California San Francisco and at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He maintains an active clinical practice and holds certifications in General Pediatrics and in Pediatric Pulmonology from the American Board of Pediatrics. Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Piedimonte’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more than 28 consecutive years and he has been principal investigator or co-investigator of more than 30 research projects funded by the NIH, the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,the American Lung Association, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, and the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Piedimonte has authored or co-authored over 350 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, monographs, editorials, and abstracts with the primary focus on airway inflammation in childhood respiratory disease, the role of early viral respiratory infections in the pathogenesis of asthma, and the neurobiology of the developing respiratory tract. His articles have been published in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Circulation Research, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Research, and the Public Library of Science (PLoS). Dr. Piedimonte serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including Pediatric Pulmonology, Pediatric Allergy Immunology & Pulmonology, Current Pediatric Reviews, and Current Opinion in Pharmacology.He is also a regular reviewer for a number of other leading journals, including The Medical Letter, PLoS, The British Medical Journal, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, Thorax, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Immunology, Pediatrics, Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatric Research, and the Archives of Disease in Childhood. Dr. Piedimonte has been an invited speaker nationally and internationally on more than 450 occasions, including being the recipient of the European Society for Paediatric Hematology and Immunology lectureship, the Jerry Elliot Memorial lectureship of the South Central Conference on Perinatal Research, the Japanese Society of Pediatric Pulmonology lectureship, the Benjamin Burrows Lung Immunology lectureship of the University of Arizona, the Frank P. Anderson Memorial lectureship of the Medical College of Georgia, the Robert H. Schwartz Lectureship in the Genetics of Pediatric Disease of the University of Rochester, and endowed lectureships from the Medical University of South Carolina, University of Louisville, and University of South Florida. Awards: Dr. Piedimonte is the recipient of a 1997 Career Investigator Award of the American Lung Association, the 1999 Investigator Award of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, and the 2008 Pfizer Visiting Professorship in Pulmonology. He is a fellow of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Chest Physicians.
