The Cybersecurity Skills Gap

By 2019, there will be approximately 1.5 million open cybersecurity jobs in the United States. It’s considered the single biggest threat to organizations around the world and it will likely only get worse. Many people feel that data breach problems are caused by the lack of skills in the cybersecurity area. It comes down to the staff that has the lack of skills and the lack of training. Companies like IBM are realizing that not every job requires a four-year degree and there are a number of roles that require different skills. IBM is open to hiring people with military backgrounds or two-year college certificates in order to bridge the gap. But along with the lack of skills is the nature of the work. An example of this is in software engineering. These engineers know how to build products but cannot think about it in the way a cybersecurity expert can – breaking it down and being creative about it. With all of this said, companies shouldn’t only be trying to bring in new capable talent, but train current employees with needed skills.

Artificial Intelligence

AI is something that could break through this skills gap as it can reduce employee responsibilities. Machine learning will also make it easier responding to cybersecurity risks.

“The number of repetitive tasks a cybersecurity worker undertakes in a work week boggles the mind,” Northcutt

We see companies like Magnifier, a behavioral analytics solution, using machine learning to model network behavior and better threat detection. There’s also Alphabet, a platform that uses storage and processing power to increase search needs.

Risk Management

In order to decrease the gap, incorporating risk management is beneficial and you’ll see immediate benefits. Cybersecurity and strategies start with the top executives in your company, but risk management isn’t just for the CISO. There should be broad support from the entire company. Programming and monitoring are crucial elements in a risk management program.

Teaching Children

In order to increase these skills in the future, we need to be getting kids involved at an early age. Children can gain experience and knowledge about the career field and the individual skills at a young age. Online schooling company, eDynamic Learning offers courses for high school students. They recently have been receiving more requests for courses in digital citizenship and cybersecurity.

“We have to be relentless in solving the cybersecurity talent shortage as the problem is not going to go away anytime soon. Although all the new technologies around us are making our lives so much easier, they are also presenting a lot more risk that needs to be managed.” Ricciuto

Keeping up with cybersecurity is difficult, but the signs are pointing toward improvement. The skill shortage can surely be fixed given the right tools and processes. Without these skilled employees, it is unlikely an organization will respond and recover from threats.

About The Transformation CISO Assembly

The 6th edition of our Transformational CISO Assembly is open for application. Join industry leaders in Miami to discuss the latest cybersecurity strategies.

In a new digital world, driven by data, businesses of all sizes are working tirelessly to secure their networks, devices, and of course, their data. Fortune 500 organizations are especially vulnerable as they have big data pools and thousands of people who need access. CISOs need to plan for worst-case scenarios, stay ahead of latest IT Security transformation technology, and maintain their company’s information assets, all without losing sight of the corporate culture.
