Digital Education Going One Step Further

I think it’s safe to say that a young child knows how to use an iPad better than us adults. This week we heard news that a new type of schooling system is entering our realm to fix this problem – Digital Enterprise Academy.

Digital Jersey, an organization created in 2013, aims to establish the state as an “internationally recognizable center for the digital industries.” The company felt that as our youth learns more digital skills throughout their schooling, there is more hope that they will take digital courses in college. They will then be equipped to fill employment needs within the ever growing and ever changing technology world. Enter Digital Enterprise Academy. The academy will focus on apprenticeship degrees at both undergrad and grad levels. They will also collaborate with the Education Department in creating internships and work placements.

On average, 17 out of every 1,000 Jersey school pupils go on to study digital courses at higher-education level.” Jersey Evening Post

Nothing is confirmed as yet, but the organization is planning to meet with the States Assembly after elections to make sure this topic is at the top of the list.

It Makes Sense

Even Chief Executive of the Education Department agrees. Young people are living in a new age digital world and chances are, it isn’t changing. While a foreign concept to some, if schools don’t reinvent their way of teaching, it is going to be difficult for the newest generation to jump in and be successful.

We will work towards a relevant digital curriculum for our children and young people, one that can bridge the gap between the skills being taught in school, and those needed in the workplace.’ Justin Donovan, Chief Education Officer, Education Department

Top skills in the tech sector right now include programming and web development, app development, digital marketing and big data analytics. And as most of us did not have the option to enroll in Digital Enterprise Academy, let’s take a look at some other things our companies can do to get us on board with these top skills.

Respond to Change

One of the most important aspects. Everyone must be on the same page. Technology is moving quickly and companies need to welcome this change.

Trust Your Staff

Word of mouth is extremely valuable and employees will be the ones who know how to bring in the experience.

Trainings

But not the “boring and useless” trainings that most workers report to having received. Understanding specific needs and priorities are key, as well as the engagement it will bring to the group.

New Jersey has the potential to become a leading U.S. digital location. We’ll be keeping an eye on Digital Enterprise Academy and how organizations make this shift.
