It’s hard to forget about the moment when the news broke that three major enterprises, Amazon, JP Morgan and Berkshire Hathaway announced the plans they have to break into the healthcare industry with the goal to create a new healthcare solution for their employees.
Business professionals and consumers shifted their interests and concerns toward these huge business players, making predictions about how this move could potentially change the sector as we know it forever. (We wrote a blog post about it, and in case you missed it, you can view it here.)
Now, nearly a month later, a familiar name in the tech game, Apple, is coming up the reigns with an announcement that shakes the healthcare industry up even more.
Apple & Healthcare
Apple has announced that it will be launching a group of health clinics, according to CNBC. The clinics will be called AC Wellness and will be made available to its employees and their families. The group is said to be launching in the spring.
This news broke not too long after the company published a website revealing the details of the group and the plans for the future, including a careers page listing jobs for a variety of different doctors such as primary care, exercise coach, and care navigator.
“This new primary care group — a group of clinical staff that is run independently from Apple but is dedicated to Apple employees — will initially only serve Apple’s employees in Santa Clara County, where its headquarters are located. Initially, it has two clinics in the county.” CNBC reports
What This Means For Healthcare
It is clear that major cooperations are starting to take healthcare into their own hands by creating healthcare solutions specific for their employees. This comes after a new report has been released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that reveals 69 million workers have reported missing work days due to illness.
“AC Wellness Network believes that having trusting, accessible relationships with our patients, enabled by technology, promotes high-quality care and a unique patient experience,” AC Wellness reports.
If enterprises can provide employees with health care like primary care, they have more control over the prevention of disease and illness in their company. Apple also has plans to design this program to promote healthy behavior among employees by hiring a population health designer to implement ways to achieve health.
Apple has not been shy when it comes to healthcare, but this move is a shift from their focus on delivering technology that engages with health initiatives, like the Apple Watch detecting irregularities in users’ heartbeat for example. Actually creating a service that caters to the health of employees is innovative, and has the ability to completely transform the healthcare industry and how enterprises go about healthcare.
It will be interesting to see how Apple products are integrated into the new unique program, and if Amazon, J.P. Morgan, and Berkshire Hathaway will play a role.
