Source codes are provided with open source software, which enables programmers to change or access a computer’s system, such as applications or programs.

People prefer open source software for a variety of reasons. Opensource outlines a few.

  • Control  – open source software enables users to have control over the coding and can change any components that are working and not working.
  • Accessible – Programmers can easily access open source software, which enables individuals to study the coding easily. This increases collaboration among teams and works to train more IT professionals.
  • Secure  – Open source software is said to be more secure than other software due to the fact that it is so easily accessible. Professionals can recognize errors, fix and manage the codes easier.

Open source software brings forward a mentality that has driven digital transformation thus far.

It involves a new way of thinking, that includes collaboration and possessing a willingness to share. This goes hand in hand with other digital tools such as cloud computing, which enables multiple employees to work together on projects, using one server.

What Is Proprietary Software?

Proprietary software, or closed software, is exactly what the name suggests: it makes programs on the software closed to anyone without a license.

“With closed source software, the source code is closely guarded, often because it’s considered a trade secret that creates scarcity and keeps the organization competitive.” Itgct reports.

Proprietary software does not require in-house IT programs, because only an exclusive amount of people can access it, with the proper codes.

When it comes to digital transformation, it may be hard to decide which software will meet your business.

Here’s a little tip, according to Tarek Abdelsalam, companies spend so much money on licenses for proprietary software licenses, it leaves very little room for other digital transformation tools in the budget.
